History

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that has been consumed as a food source since ancient times. The Aztecs harvested it from Lake Texcoco in Mexico, where it was called tecuitlatl. It was also consumed by communities living around Lake Chad in Africa. In modern times, it gained widespread popularity as a nutritional supplement beginning in the 1970s.
