History

Schisandra, known as wu wei zi or 'five-flavor fruit' in Chinese, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Chinese herbal medicine and is mentioned in the Divine Farmer's Classic of Materia Medica. It was traditionally consumed by hunters and explorers in Siberia and the Russian Far East to increase endurance.
