History

Astragalus has been one of the most important tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia and appears prominently in the Shennong Bencao Jing. In China it is known as Huang Qi, meaning 'yellow leader,' referring to both the yellow color of its root and its position as a leading tonic herb.
